1. I would like to update my system to the newest 10.10 Yosemite version, but I use quite intensively Eclipse + ADT to develop apps for Android. Does anyone have any experience with running this softw.
2. Eclipse will work as it always has, however the text and the graphics on screen for non retina optimized apps will look less sharp. To see a worst case example here is one provided from the MacBook Pro Retina Display Analysis done by AnandTech. On the left is a non-retina app while on the right is a retina app.

In this post , I will explain how to setup Theano library and used it with Pydev, Eclipse python development plugin.

I work in MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) which has two GPU cards, first intel IRIS and second is NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M.

Theano is python library that used in the deep learning application and our work will target NVIDIA GPUS.

I assume that you install python in advance with other libraries like numpy and scipy.

first step is to install Theano in your macbook. simply open the terminal and type:

pip install Theano

this should work if you already install XCODE command line tools in advance. in case that you didn’t installed it before , then please install it first and then retype the command again. second step is to install the CUDA toolkit and driver. in my case , I download the recent CUDA toolkit package which is CUDA 7.5. you can download it from here after selecting your platform:

once you install it , you will find the CUDA root in the following PATH:

/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-7.5

now , we should create two environment variable , CUDA_ROOT and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so open the terminal and add the following two lines to your .bash_profile file in home directory:

export CUDA_ROOT=/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-7.5

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-7.5/lib

Third step is to create Theano configuration file “.theanorc” in your home directory. by the way , Theano installation don’t create the file by default , so you have to create it by your self. in the file , write down the following lines:

[global]

floatX = float32

device = gpu0

[nvcc]

fastmath = True

[cuda]

root=/Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-7.5

the device flag , tell Theano which device should run the code into , the number “0” specify the GPU card number. in my case

NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M was gpu0.

now , open eclipse and create python application and copy and paste the code from the following website:

In eclipse preference menu , make sure that the theano library path is added to the eclipse configuration. for example because I’m using anaconda , theano installation was installed in the following path:

/Users/amrkoura/anaconda/lib/python2.7/site-packages

and so , I added the path to my python libraries as shown here in the screenshoot.

Also , to be sure that the eclipse will see the correct LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable , I create the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable in eclipse and its value equals /Developer/NVIDIA/CUDA-7.5/lib . you can see how to add new environment variable from the below image.

now when I run the application in eclipse , I got the following output:

which indicate that the GPU is used correctly.
